New nursing scholarships for Mildura
Apr 03, 2014
A valuable new scholarship has been announced that will support nursing students at La Trobe University Mildura.
The Ramsay Health Care Nursing Scholarship of $5000 will be awarded by La Trobe University each year to one of the University's locally-based students.
The scholarship was announced at the La Trobe University Mildura Awards Ceremony by the university's Pro Vice Chancellor Richard Speed.
The Mildura Base Hospital's chief executive officer Dane Huxley said the scholarship reflected the value the hospital placed on supporting career opportunities for local students.
"We have developed partnerships with several institutes and organisations to support the careers of young health professionals, often from outside the region, and this is another initiative that focuses on our local community," Mr Huxley said.
"We place a lot of direct effort in trying to encourage and recruit health professionals from elsewhere and we are now backing that up with better facilities locally as shown by the accommodation development now getting underway.
"But as a community we need to pay equal attention to the opportunities to train our own young people right here in Mildura, to fill the growing need for nurses and other health professionals."
Mr Huxley said the scholarship was being offered for an initial three-year period, beginning in 2015, and would be available to any student enrolled in Nursing at La Trobe University Mildura.
"We hope this partnership will reinforce the message to local students that nursing is a great career and there are excellent career paths in our local community," Mr Huxley said.
