Support available for people facing stress from storms

Nov 01, 2016

Mildura Base Hospital has urged community members and farmers under stress from last Friday’s devastating storms to make use of emotional support available from MBH mental health services.

MBH Director of Mental Health Services Belinda Pavilach said mental health staff were ready and able to support farmers through an extremely challenging time.

“We have the resources ready and available to provide assessment and treatment for mental health issues, irrespective of the cause,” Ms Pavilach said.

“As a service provider in a rural area, we are very aware of the impacts the recent extreme weather events have had, and will continue to have,” she said.

“We are really at the beginning of what will be an ongoing challenge to many people in our community, and it’s important for anyone feeling distress to seek the support they need.”

Ms Pavilach said the MBH Mental Health Services team works in partnership with a range of community and health providers to ensure people can access support appropriate to their situation.

“Assessment and treatment can depend on many factors and the strong partnerships we have in place as health and community providers mean was can provide support and assistance to people, whatever their specific needs,” she said.

“If you are seeking support yourself, or you are worried about someone close to you, the MBH Mental Health Services can be contacted on 5022 3500.”

Mildura Rural City Council is coordinating the district recovery effort and residents in need of assistance can contact 5018 8100 to be directed to the appropriate support network.

Anyone contemplating uncertainty in their lives under any circumstances can also call Lifeline on 13 11 14 or Beyondblue on 1300 224 636.
