headspace Mildura - integrated service hub for youth

Mildura Base Hospital's Mental Health Services is excited to be taking the role of lead agency in the development of a new headspace Centre in Mildura.

headspace is the National Youth Mental Health Foundation helping young people who are going through a tough time. There are currently 65 headspace centres across the country, with the headspace Mildura being one of 20 to be opened in the coming 12 months.

Mildura Base Hospital's acting director of Mental Health Services Belinda Pavilach said the strength of Mildura's centre would come from its broad community and agency backing.

"headspace Mildura will be a 'one-stop' service hub where youth (12-25 years) and their families can access a range of services and advice on mental health, general health, education, vocation, drug and alcohol use and housing," Ms Pavilach said.

"The strength of this integrated service hub comes from the members of the consortium that have been instrumental in bringing it to reality for the local area," she said.

The consortium comprises agencies including: Sunraysia Community Health Services, Mallee Accommodation and Support Program, Mildura Rural City Council, Mallee Family Care, Sunraysia Mallee Ethnic Communities Council, Northern Mallee Community Partnerships, Mallee District Aboriginal Services and MADEC; along with valued collaborative partnerships with agencies such and Northern Mallee Local Learning Network and Dept. of Justice.

headspace Mildura will operate from the beginning of 2015 with a site still to be finalised. But Ms Pavilach said the decision would be based on a range of criteria.

"It will be in a contemporary youth-friendly venue, readily accessible to young people, within close proximity to the central business district, schools and public transport," she said.

headspace Mildura services will be offered without the stigma or red tape that young people often associate with accessing health services.
"Working closely with local youth will ensure the service meets their needs while the agencies contributing ensures a quality service provision.

"Mildura Base Hospital is very proud to take on the lead agency for headspace Mildura."
